I used to see a variety of hawks and buzzards where I grew up in Maryland - and once in a while there would be a turkey vulture - distinctive for their immense wing span and tiny, naked turkey-like little head. Quite a contrast.
Rarely did I see any as close as the two of these who landed right in our back yard today. Too slow I was to take a picture, so shown is an image of one - exactly as these looked.
Quite strange and menacing they are - huge and very cocky just walking in our yard. So weird looking with that little turkey head on top of that big black body.
Our brave lil fellow, Nanook - or Nooky as we often call him (handy it is to always have some available! :) ) - took notice from the window.
Interesting because he trembles easily, and is frequently spooked by much less capable threats.
A brave lil fellow Nook was today. He was let out and he immediately he charged them at full speed - caution to the wind!
Off they flew, rising very slowing, their awesome wingspan a stark reminder that they are no ordinary bird.
I realize they prefer their prey already "passed" - and they promptly spotted something and settled into a low circle very nearby over whatever it was.
Just to be cautious, we called our courageous buddy back inside - less they glance back for another look at their mighty attacker, and decide he look nice and tasty and a better choice!
